Who we are and what we do

The Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team – Ashburton is a search and rescue team of highly skilled and professional volunteer team members that is part of the Dartmoor Rescue Group (DRG) that was started in 1968. We are affiliated to Mountain Rescue England and Wales (Post Number 78).

As the name suggests our rescue centre is on the outskirts of Ashburton in Devon on the edge of South Dartmoor. Our main responsibility is for search and rescue of missing persons on Dartmoor, as well as in the South and East Devon area that includes urban areas such as Torbay and Exeter.

Although the police have the ultimate responsibility for responding to and investigating reports of missing persons, they will often request the services of volunteer Search and Rescue organisations such as Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Ashburton to assist in such matters. Our responsibility covers the highland areas of Dartmoor to the fringes of the Devon coast, where the coastguard takes over. Hence our search and rescue operations can cover both rural and urban areas.

Voluntary Organisation

One key element about us is that we are an organisation of volunteers that relies on the valued time and effort of its team members to provide our essential service free of charge to those in need. We are a registered charity (number: 1106098) and rely on kind donations from business and the public plus fundraising activities by our members. Our members include a wide diversity of professionals, including A&E consultants, social care workers and electronics engineers.

In order to perform effective search and rescue operations we are equipped with a mobile control vehicle, swift water rescue equipment and Land Rover ambulances. We are highly skilled in radio ops, first aid and navigation skills to name a few. We also are trained to operated within the other DRG teams (Plymouth, Tavistock and Okehampton) as we are often called upon to work side by side with these other teams.
