Call to lone walker north of Eastern White Barrow

    Written by

A callout for assistance was issued at 09:07 this morning by Devon and Cornwall Police to find a lone walker who had become lost whilst out on a camping trip. The walker was also diabetic and had been advised to stay put in his tent and wait for team members to find him.

A team of 5 team members alongside 2 from our sister team at Plymouth, drove team Landrovers up to the Marker Stone on the Two Moors Way near Crossways from which we walked out to meet him. In the meantime our Search Manager used the SARLOC system to locate his position and pass on the resulting grid reference to the team on the ground.

Dartmoor Search and Rescue Ashburton called out to assist a missing walker near Eastern White Barrow

We reached the walker shortly after 11:25, assessed his condition and were happy he could be walked off as apart from dehydration, he was perfectly ok.

Our team Leader said. “We have had a number of callouts to the same area this year as walkers get caught out by that section of the Two Moors Way being tricky to navigate as it is not clearly marked. If you are going to attempt the walk, make sure you have the ability to map read and navigate to the required standard.”

“The walker did the right thing in the circumstances and we are pleased he was in good health and we could escort him off the moor to his family, a little wiser than when he left.”
