The 2019 event will take place on Sunday March 24th.

To take part, please complete the registration form at the bottom of this page.

    Do you fancy a challenge?

Due to popular demand and the success of the previous events, we are running the Templer Way sponsored walk again on Sunday March 24th 2019 and we would really like you to take part to raise money and support the work of our search and rescue team.

Walkers enjoy Dartmoor Search and Rescue Ashburton's 18 mile Templer Way Challenge

Start:          9AM Haytor lower car park, by the Haytor Visitor Centre at grid reference SX 765 771

Finish:        London Inn, The Green, Shaldon TQ14 0DN

Duration:   Approx 5 – 7 hours for a person of reasonable fitness

Cost:           The event is our main fundraising event of the year, so we ask you to raise sponsorship or make a minimum donation of £20 per adult.

For children under 14 (accompanied by a supervising adult) it would be fabulous if you could try and raise what sponsorship you can.

The volunteers from Dartmoor Search and Rescue (Ashburton) are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide search and rescue services for Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and the Ambulance Service.

As we cannot compromise on safety, we must raise at least £28,000 each year for a rolling programme of essential vehicle and equipment maintenance and replacement. The search and rescue team is a charity and these funds are raised almost entirely from donations and fundraising from the general public.

The 18 mile sponsored walk will primarily follow the route of the Templer Way Trail from the moorland of Haytor to the sea at Shaldon. It should take a reasonably fit person between 5 and 7 hours to complete.  We will have members walking the route as well as manning checkpoints along the way. All those who complete the event will receive a finishers medal.

The event will be open to adults, and children where accompanied by adults.

    The Route

The Templer Way links Haytor on Dartmoor to the mouth of the Teign. It follows, where possible, the route of the Granite Tramway, the Stover Canal and the Teign Estuary, where granite and clay were transported to the port of Teignmouth. The route is named after the Templer family who built the tramway and canal.

Dartmoor Search and Rescue Ashburton's Templer Way Challenge map sponsored by Moorgate Vets

For the 2019 event, we have maps printed on waterproof paper of the Challenge route which will be available to buy (£2 each) on the day. The production of these maps has kindly been sponsored by Moorgate Vets and produced by GoMaps of Buckfastleigh.

There will be checkpoints at the end of each stage.

    Stage 1: 4miles/6.4km Haytor to Edgemoor *
Stage 2: 2miles/3.2km Edgemoor to Great Plantation
Stage 3: 4miles/6.5km Great Plantation to via Stover Country Park to Locks Bridge **
Stage 4: 2miles/3.5km Locks Bridge to Newton Abbot Town Quay
Stage 5: 2.5miles/3.8km Newton Abbot Town Quay to Coombe Cellars
Stage 6: 3miles/4.5km Coombe Cellars to the London Inn, Shaldon

    * Part of stage 1 will follow a permissive path to avoid a road section. We are very grateful to the landowner and tenant for kindly giving us permission to use this section of the route.

** The waymarked Templer Way Trail was changed recently however we follow the 'original' route that takes in the Great Plantation and Stover Country Park where we stop for a lunch break.

So please do join us for what promises to be a lovely day out walking a beautiful route from moor to sea.

To encourage your sponsorship efforts, this year we will offer a prize to the team/individual taking part who raises the most sponsorship. The smart new Templer Way finishers medal. Awarded for completing Dartmoor Search and Rescue's 18 mile Templer Way Challenge.

What do I need to bring with me?

We ask people to bring their own packed lunches and drinks to meet their needs for the day.  Participants will also need to bring their own walking equipment including waterproofs suitable for the walk as if you were going for a walk on Dartmoor.

Will there be any transport back to pick up my car at the Haytor Car Park?

Yes. We will be running a shuttle bus for those that need it.  But if you can make your own arrangements that would be welcomed. At busy times, we may need to just transport drivers only back to their cars at Haytor so they can return to Shaldon to collect their passengers.

    Are dogs allowed?

Yes absolutely. Well behaved dogs on a lead, and their owners, are very welcome.
